Mobility Analysis and Design Intern

This position will support multimodal transportation planning projects in the Office of Mobility Analysis and Design, with a focus on data collection, analysis, and community involvement. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to learn about the various aspects of transportation planning at DVRPC while making meaningful contributions to current projects. This position will assist in developing and preparing concept plans for a multimodal transportation project in Philadelphia, including analysis of public and stakeholder input, concept plan design, and assisting with writing a final report. The positions will provide similar support to other projects throughout the region. Other tasks may include collecting and analyzing field data and other data (roadway geometry, traffic characteristics, demographic information, etc.), developing traffic microsimulation models, and composing maps, charts, plans and other visuals to communicate findings to stakeholders and the public. Close supervision is provided by a supervisor who assigns tasks, gives preliminary instructions, reviews work in process and upon completion for quality and adherence to established standards.  This kind of work requires strong research skills, an affinity for quantitative methods, and a strong interest in transportation and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Create and/or and refine concept plans for proposed transportation recommendations.
  • Research best practices for community engagement related to active transportation.
  • Assist in developing a public participation strategy, including establishing objectives, designing surveys and other activities, and creating maps, posters, and other informational materials; potential to conduct intercept surveys and implement other in-person engagement strategies.
  • Develop maps, graphics, and illustrations for public and stakeholder engagement, presentations, and reports.
  • May assist in the collection of data, including conducting field work.
  • Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in community engagement and transportation planning.
  • Effective research and analysis skills, including the ability to evaluate quantitative and qualitative input from the public and apply findings to a transportation project. 
  • Ability to present results of research and analyses effectively in clear and concise written and graphic form.
  • Experience engaging with the public in various settings is preferred.
  • Experience using Excel to analyze and visualize data is preferred.
  • Experience with ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator is preferred.
  • Experience with Remix and Synchro is preferred.

Availability

This position requires a commitment of up to 37.5 hours per week, possibly including some evening and weekend availability.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Students with Work-Study funding are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Education and Training 

Must have completed at least THREE YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in transportation planning and/or community engagement
