Job Description

The Socioeconomic & Land Use Analytics Program under the Office of Long-Range Planning produces ongoing data analysis on regional trends, scenario planning, socioeconomic forecasting for the Long-Range Plan and other agency needs. The Office of Long-Range Planning produces the Commission’s Long-Range Plan—which links transportation, land use, economic growth, equity, and the environment—every four-years. This internship is an opportunity to work independently and collaboratively on discrete projects including further development and application of our cloud-based UrbanSim land use model, development of scenario planning tools like the VisionEval model, and planning toward health impacts models. The forthcoming Connections 2050 Long-Range Plan will be presented for public comment over the summer, and additional tasks may come from preparing Plan documents and related public outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with running and synthesizing UrbanSim land use model results, as well as developing model improvements.
  • Gather data on proposed development projects in the region and other key datasets.
  • Help to gather UrbanSim outputs and other necessary inputs needed and run the VisionEval open-source strategic planning model for the Greater Philadelphia region.
  • Research health impacts models such as Integrated Transport and Health Impact Model (ITHIM) for Health economic assessment tool (HEAT) for potential integration with VisionEval.
  • Assist professional staff by creating content such as maps, tables, charts, and other visual elements; and research, data collection, and product preparation.
  • Participate or assist in stakeholder and study committee meetings as needed.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and interest in demographics, transportation, land use, equity, environment and sustainability, economic development, and performance-based planning principles and issues.
  • Experience in R and/or Python coding.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, ArcGIS or other data analysis tools.
  • Ability to assimilate complex technical information and discuss it clearly verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective relations with associates and partner organizations.
  • Ability to switch among diverse tasks while meeting deadlines.

Availability

This position requires a commitment of up to 30 hours per week.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Students with Work-Study funding are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Education and Training

Must have completed at least THREE YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program (preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in transportation engineering and planning.
