Get to know Graphic Design and Print Specialist Angela Rio.
What did you want to be growing up?
I always wanted to be an artist and to live alone with four pomeranians.
What was your first job?
Cleaning a dentist office and a widow’s house.
How did you end up at DVRPC?
I was painting a mural at the PHL Airport while talking about needing stability to the staff member who was tasked to keep an eye on me. She suggested looking at the Cultural Alliance Job Bank for work. That’s where I found the listing for a rare position in print and graphic design in a field that aligned with my values to serve the community and the city I love. I walked into the building to deliver my resume and portfolio to DVRPC in-person.
What is your work/life philosophy?
I try to take a moment out of every day to do something that reminds me of who I am. It could be drawing for just 10 minutes, sanding one piece of wood, humming a melody in my voice memos, snapping a photo, or writing down an interesting phrase. It doesn’t have to be “good”—that word means something different to everyone. When I show up for myself that way, then I can wholeheartedly show up for others.
What 3 words best describe you?
Imaginative, Open-minded, Attentive
Who is someone you’d like to meet?
I would have loved to meet Kay Sage or Hilma Af Klint. They’ve unfortunately passed on though, so I would have to say Miranda July.
What is your recent obsession?
My kitchen! I was living in a studio/efficiency with a mini-fridge, a hot plate, and a toaster oven for 8 years before this new apartment, so I am in love with my oven and full-size fridge.
What is a recent gift you’ve given or received?
I gave my brother, Joe, an ironic book about a comedian we like titled Dear Andy Kaufman, I Hate Your Guts! and a dvd of Johnny Cash live.
What is the most meaningful item in your house?
There are a lot of objects of affection that hold meaning to me, but one stands out because it was given to me during a really hard time. It’s a small plastic figurine of a lady in a pink and white gown holding a baby. My best friend, Eileen, gave it to me for Valentine’s Day a couple of years ago. It’s supposed to be a cake topper for a new mom, but I think of it as a totem of nurturing creation, so she sits on my desk at home to remind me to water my projects.
What are you looking forward to the most in the next year?
I’m excited to be making more meals for friends, making more art in my new place, seeing Devo this spring, and taking my dog Dizzy on new trails.
